Youtubers Christopher and Kimberly Phelps have been charged with child endangerment and insurance fraud after deliberately causing car accidents that they recorded and uploaded to their channel.
When it comes to YouTube, one of the most popular materials on the platform are videos that fuel the unhealthy curiosity of the viewer. For example, a car accident on a DVR.
Christopher and Kimberly Phelps did just that, uploading 162 videos about car accidents and incidents related to aggressive behavior on the roads, which helped them gain popularity on their channel: BLU3 GHO57.
But now the couple has been charged with insurance fraud and endangering children after they allegedly caused accidents themselves for insurance money.
Youtubers allegedly caused accidents due to clicks on YouTube
The San Bernardino, California Sheriff’s Department somehow found out about the channel and passed the information to the state insurance department.
According to a press release, the California Department of Insurance found that 23 videos of the couple were related to 17 insurance claims filed by Christopher, as well as 42 videos related to incidents involving aggressive behavior on the road and attempted collisions involving him.
It also says that in February 2023, Christopher was involved in a “suspicious collision” and shortly after showing the events preceding it, posted a video on YouTube. After the investigation, he was arrested, but released on bail.
Christopher Phelps has since been charged with six counts of assault with a deadly weapon, 11 counts of insurance fraud and five counts of endangering children.
His wife, Kimberly Phelps, was charged with two counts of child endangerment and one count of insurance fraud.
The pair were arrested on March 22, 2023 and are being held in separate detention centers. Both are being held on $500,000 bail.
