Yard Act Announced a New Venue For a Concert in London After The Closure of Brixton Academy

Yard Act have announced a new venue for their upcoming concert in London after the closure of Brixton Academy.

O2 Academy Brixton will be closed until April after a fatal crowd crush at an Asake concert at this venue in December, and a number of concerts, in addition, are now postponed.

People outside the hall on December 15 were able to get into the show, which led to overcrowding and the cancellation of the concert halfway through. Two people died as a result of the stampede — 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo and 23-year-old security officer Gaby Hutchinson. The third participant, 21 years old, is still in hospital in critical condition.

After the O2 Academy Brixton licence was temporarily suspended until January 16, Lambeth Council said they would meet again that day to discuss the future of the venue. Before the meeting, a representative of the Academy Music Group (AMG), the company that manages the venue, said that it would be closed voluntarily until April while investigations continue. Then at the meeting it was announced that the license of the site will also be suspended for three months.

Writing today (January 31) on Twitter about their upcoming concert scheduled in Brixton, Yard Act confirmed that they are now moving to another location.

“It’s coming,” the group tweeted. “Due to the current issues and uncertainty around Brixton, we had to move our show to another location. Now we will perform at the end of the Overload tour at Troxy on the same day, May 4.”

After the closure of Brixton Academy, many concerts at this venue are being moved to new venues across London.

Dates in January for Wallows, Sleep Token and PVRIS have been moved to Eventim Apollo, and the March Dry Cleaning and Beartooth concerts will now take place at The Roundhouse and OVO Arena Wembley, respectively. Röyksopp, meanwhile, was one of those who made the same decision as Yard Act, moving his show on February 19 to Troxy.
