The weekend of January 21 and 22 was marked by the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated in many Asian countries.

In Korea, this holiday is called “Seollal”, and on this occasion, many Kpop idols wished a happy Seollal to fans and Koreans.

For example, Jang Wonyoung, a member of IVE, wished for this with an Instagram post where we see her posing in a hanbok, a traditional Korean dress.

Girls’ Generation member Seohyun also left a similar message with a photo in hanbok and the inscription “Happy Lunar New Year”.

CL also left a message wishing a happy lunar New Year.

All the stars were talking about Seollal or Lunar New Year, and unfortunately, this caused a flood of hateful comments for the fact that the Chinese New Year is a “cultural appropriation”, according to Chinese netizens.

Chan Wonen from IVE saw a comment section on his Instagram full of puking and finger emojis…

Seohyun and CL from Girls’ Generation saw the same “Happy Chinese New Year” comments to “correct” their “mistakes”.

Amid the growing hatred of how to name the holiday, others note that the struggle for its name contradicts the very essence of the holiday itself: to mark new beginnings.
