Squid shared a brand new song and video — check out the visualization of “The Blades” starring Charlotte Richie below.

The track is the last preview from the upcoming second LP of the band “O Monolith”, which is due to be released on June 9 on the Warp label.

About the new song, drummer and vocalist Ollie Judge said: “It’s a lot more vulnerable than what we’ve done before, which can be quite a difficult thing. Dan [Carey] and I talked about vocals and how it would be nice not to relax completely and not resort to shouting, because it brings more satisfaction. The end of the song is very soft and gentle, and I don’t think we’ve done anything like this before.

“At first glance, this is a song about police brutality, the last part of which is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Storyteller Heart, although I have never read this book, I just saw a parody of it in The Simpsons. In the plot, it follows a police helicopter pilot’s day ending with him lying in bed and hearing another pilot circling in the sky as if he was mocking him. There’s a deeper meaning to my fear of ego somewhere out there, but I’m still working on which part of the song it comes from.”

At the moment, the album has been announced with the singles “Swing (In A Dream)” and “Undergrowth”, and Judge recently told NME about what to expect from the next 2021 debut “Bright Green Field”.

“We’re leaning more towards experimental song structures,” he continued. “When I was having a really hard time writing lyrics and an album, I saw this tweet from Missy Elliott saying, ‘Don’t make a second album that sounds like your first — just go crazy,'” he said. “It’s definitely harder to play live.”

At the end of this year, the band will embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland, tickets for which can be purchased here.
