The series The Wheel of Time, premiered last Friday (19) and in just a few days it became the most-watched debut production of 2021 from Amazon Prime Video. Brazil, together with the United States, India, Canada, France and Germany, was among the countries where the production was the most successful.
“We can say with certainty that The Wheel of Time was the most watched debut of the year and one of the top 5 series releases of all time for Prime Video,” said Amazon Studios Director Jennifer Salke for Deadline website this Tuesday (23).
The streaming platform doesn’t reveal viewership numbers, but Salke said there were “tens and tens of millions of views” of the first 3 episodes of the production. In addition to the good numbers of streams, the executive said that the series achieved one of the best completion rates of episodes of the entire service.
“It’s proof [of success] for everyone involved, including the incredible cast, led by Rosamund Pike, and our showrunner Rafe Judkins, and the entire crew, who have taken viewers on a journey through a visually stunning world populated by many characters and cultures. It’s unlike any other fantasy series and our customers around the world are responding,” argued Salke in a statement.
The debut of writer Robert Jordan’s eponymous book series adaptation (which was completed after his death by Brandon Sanderson) surpassed Amazon Prime Video’s expectations.
In addition to revealing the good performance of The Wheel of Time with the first 3 episodes, Jennifer Salke said that Amazon will continue to bet on the fantasy genre. In addition to The Lord of the Rings, which premieres on September 2, 2022, the company is finalizing agreements to work on a series based on games from the Mass Effect franchise.
