The Opportunity to Rest Key Personnel and The First Goal of Wout Weghorst Will Please Erik ten Hag

Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the first semi-final match of the League Cup at Forest Stadium on Wednesday.

This means that Erik ten Hag can finally rest some key players in the second leg, which is scheduled to take place at Old Trafford on February 1.

The result will be a huge boost to Ten Hag and United’s trophy ambitions, as they are now just one step away from reaching the final at Wembley.

ETH can afford to rest key personnel

With the match schedule set to become even more difficult as United are the only Premier League team competing on all four fronts, this impressive result will be music to the ears of the Dutch coach.

Players like Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes have always been in the first team after the World Cup, and the coach may get a chance to give them a rest.

The result was partly helped by Forest’s open game plan, when manager Steve Cooper hinted that they would try to shift the attack towards the visitors.

This suited the “red devils” for the “T”, who intercepted the ball in dangerous areas and went on the offensive again and again.

United’s goals were scored by Rashford, who scored a superb solo goal early in the game. Vout Weghorst scored at the end of the break before Fernandes settled the matter late on.

With Anthony Martial almost permanently injured, Weghorst’s role is becoming increasingly important and he has started the last three games in all competitions since going on loan.

Weghorst’s goal will boost his confidence

While his delay and overall play in the tie was decent, the striker is ultimately paid to score goals, and that was not enough until tonight.

He was the first to pounce when Anthony’s volley was parried by Wayne Hennessy, and deftly hit the net with a kick from the outside of his foot.

This will give him more confidence when solving more complex tasks. It is likely that he will lead the line of 20-time champions of the English League for some time.
