The Office: John Krasinski Refused To Shoot A Scene Where He Would Betray Pam

The Office: John Krasinski revealed that he refused to shoot a scene from The Office in which his character, Jim, would cheat on Pam (Jenna Fischer). The scene in question would take place in the eighth season of the series, when his character would go on a business trip with Cathy (Lindsey Broad). The revelation was published in Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office.

“I remember saying things I never thought I’d say before, like, ‘I’m not going to record this,’” wrote the actor. “My feeling is that there’s a limit you could push the audience with. They are so dedicated. We show great respect for them. But there comes a time when if you push them too hard, they’ll never come back. And I think if you show Jim cheating, they’re never coming back.”

Cathy Simms replaced Pam when she was on maternity leave during season eight of The Office. Since her arrival on the series, Cathy has always been interested in Jim, but he has never responded. Despite that, Pam was always suspicious of them both. When the team traveled to Florida for three weeks, Cathy tried to start a romance with Jim, but thanks to Krasinski, that never came close.

The show’s showrunner Greg Daniels also commented on what the kiss could mean to fans.

“I think that kind of concern was good in terms of fan engagement,” Daniels recalled. “I think they knew what was coming. They were very comfortable with the show they were getting, and I needed to worry them that maybe I’d give them a bad ending so they’d be happy when they got a good ending.”

The 10 seasons of The Office are available on Amazon Prime Video.
