‘The New Mutants’ could gross $ 10 million at launch

The reopening of theaters in North America may have The New Mutants as the biggest box office in the first weekend. According to Deadline, the film is expected to gross between $ 8 million and $ 10 million when shown in more than 2,000 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

The film will have as its main competitor for the first place at the box office the comedy Bill & Ted: Face the Music. However, the film starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will reach a smaller number of theaters – the majority being independent cinema networks – and will be released on VOD simultaneously.

The big debut at the reopening of cinemas, Tenet, arrives in Canada only. In the USA, Christopher Nolan’s new feature will be released a week later, on September 3rd.

Fighting nature

Novos Mutantes was scheduled to debut in April 2018, but has been postponed since. Now, with the date confirmed for this weekend, the film needs to deal with the pandemic of the new coronavirus and hurricane Laura, which should decrease the expected audience for the film.

In the part of covid-19, the restriction measures caused the cinemas to reduce the number of tickets per session. The hurricane caused Cinemark to close rooms in Louisiana and Texas. The storm was downgraded to Category 1, but about half a million people are without power in these two states.

With Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga forming the main cast and directing for Josh Boone (The Fault in the Stars) Os Novos Mutantes is scheduled to debut in Brazil on September 10th.
