Since joining Liverpool in 2021, Claudio Taffarel has combined his duties at the club with his role as goalkeeping coach in Brazil, but now that’s over.
Taffarel, the legendary Brazilian goalkeeper, signed a contract with the Reds two years ago on the recommendation of Alisson.
Alisson’s request to invite his compatriot to work with John Achterberg and assistant Jack Robinson arose because of their relationship with the national team.
The 56-year-old has largely worked to nurture the next generation of Merseyside goalkeepers, including Marcelo Pitaluga and Harvey Davies, but his guardianship also extends to senior stoppers.
However, during international breaks and tournaments such as the World Cup, Taffarel traveled with Brazil as part of their coaching staff.
However, according to Globo Esporte, he has now been relieved of his duties due to the departure of Coach Tite in December.
Tite retired after Brazil’s defeat by Croatia in the World Cup quarterfinals, and now many of his support team have also left, with only six people remaining in the new unit under interim coach Ramon Menezes.
Taffarel was replaced by Silvio Jardim, who also works with the Brazilian team America-MG.
It is expected that he will still retain his role at Liverpool and can now stay on Merseyside on a permanent basis, which can certainly benefit the club.
In addition to Pitaluga and Davis, who are considered next in line, Vitezslav Yarosh, Jakub Ojinski, Fabian Mrozek and Luke Hewitson are also on the academy’s lists.
There could also be a promotion in the ranks this summer as Adrian’s contract expires and Kaoimhin Kelleher is likely to push for a move.
This would leave vacant places No. 2 and No. 3 for Alisson, although it is likely that Liverpool will replace Adrian with at least one senior goalkeeper.
It remains to be seen who Pitaluga or Davis will be considered a more suitable candidate for the reserve role, and Taffarel may play a key role in determining this.
It is believed that Taffarel’s departure from the Brazilian team has nothing to do with the fact that Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino are excluded from the main Menezes squad.
