Sonic Frontiers promises to be one of the biggest shakes in the series, bringing Blue Blur into the open world. This led to the fact that the game began to be compared with other games in this genre, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The first reveal of the Sonic Frontiers gameplay demonstrated a number of elements that further cemented these comparisons, for example, the melancholic atmosphere and music. The month of June also gave fans a detailed insight into the mechanics of the game, including combat.
The Sonic Frontiers combat mechanics show that Sonic has his iconic moves, such as a homing attack, and several new attacks, such as his new Cyloop technique. At the same time, Sonic surrounds the enemy with blue energy, causing stun. Sonic Team recently revealed what to expect from Sonic Frontiers mechanics, including the game’s skill tree.

Based on early previews of Sonic Frontiers from Game Informer, Sonic can collect skill pieces that allow players to earn skill points, and battles contribute to the counter. The Cyloop ability is the first ability that Sonic Frontiers gives the player, which can create an AoE attack when surrounded by multiple enemies, it can be used to destroy pieces of armor or solve puzzles. While the Tsilup is the primary skill of Sonic Frontiers, the game also offers eleven additional skills that are part of the skill tree, and three more are locked behind the plot development.
These unlocks include Sonic Boom, where Sonic can shoot a projectile blade in the middle of a combo, Speed Burst, which increases the character’s strength when reaching the maximum combo, and an ability known as Air Tricks, allowing players to taunt in the air to earn skill points. There is also Wild Crash, where Sonic kicks in flight towards the enemy and Stomp moves.
Other unlockable skills include QOL enhancements, such as a switchable Auto Combo or Quick Cyloop, which automatically activates certain skills. More striking abilities in Sonic Frontiers include Spin Slash, Homing Shot and Loop Kick. The latest unlock in the skill tree is known as Recovery Smash, which gives Sonic the ability to immediately counterattack after he has been hit.
While the skill tree is primarily how Sonic will learn new moves, the game also has another way to level up. Players can find mysterious Coco creatures in Sonic Frontiers, and two of them, known as the Hermit Coco and Elder Coco, can improve Sonic’s characteristics. Hermit Coco can increase Sonic’s attack or defense, while Elder Coco can increase Sonic’s speed or ring capacity.
The release of Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for the holidays of 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
