Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick compares their star franchise to that of Agent 007, in addition to ensuring that they are in no rush to launch new installments. The Grand Theft Auto franchise is back in the spotlight -if it ever stops- thanks to the recent release of GTA Trilogy, the remastering of the trilogy that made history not only of the sandbox genre in the 128-bit generation , but also video games in general. This, coupled with the fact that the fireproof GTA V continues to sell at an unstoppable rate, makes Take Two think of it as a license that lasts many years, something that Straus Zelnick, CEO of the company, has compared to James Bond.
The stories of the most popular British secret agent in history go back to nothing less than the 1950s. Will GTA be able to last that long? Time will tell, but of course this is the intention in Take Two, and not only with this saga, but also with others such as Red Dead Redemption or NBA 2K, which are expected to continue to sell in spades for many years.
“I don’t know if you’ve seen the latest James Bond movie, it’s great. And you want every franchise to be like James Bond,” Zelnick told a conference call. “There are only a few franchises in entertainment that are capable of falling into that category, but they exist, and I think GTA is one of them, but also Red Dead, and NBA, as basketball is going to continue to exist.”
Take Two takes its time
Meanwhile, Zelnick adds that he is against the annual deliveries in franchises that are not sports, due to the risk of suffering a certain feeling of saturation. He uses, again, the example of Agent 007.
“I’ve always said that by annualizing non-sports franchises you run the risk of burning down intellectual property even if it’s good, so we take the time to do something that we think is incredibly phenomenal, and we also intentionally let our titles rest with what’s a growing demand for that game, becoming a special event, “says Zelnick. “I’m going to see a Bond movie because I know there won’t be another for two months, and I’m going to see them all.”
Obviously, it is only a matter of time before a sixth installment of GTA arrives, although rumors have been circulating for years, especially about its setting. However, everything seems to indicate that Take Two is in no rush given the great commercial performance of both GTA V and its online side.
