When it was announced that we would have a live-action version of Super Mario Bros for theaters, fans were curious about how the games would be adapted for the big screen. However, when the film was released in 1993, it ended up not being well received by critics and the public.
Before the film hit theaters, there were already talks for the production to gain a continuation, however, due to the negative reception, the film sequence starring the duo Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo never saw the light of day.
Now, almost 30 years later, the question remains: what would a possible Super Mario Bros 2 look like?
It is likely that the sequel would continue with the same atmosphere as the original, however, the production should approach the universe of games, with a more playful and less dark spirit.
Possibly we would have more colors and more fantastic elements, with a simpler story, like someone being kidnapped, and with the brothers needing to make the rescue.
At the beginning of production, the original film had a script defined as a “family fantasy”, lighter than what we saw in cinemas. This makes us believe that the sequel could be closer to the original idea and the universe of games, even with a more “cute” version of Yoshi, just as we saw in the cartoons.
