Liverpool are showing interest in Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmainers, but the Italian club’s sporting director insists that “there is nothing concrete yet.”
Koopmainers is considered a potential target for the Reds as they weigh additions to their midfield ranks in 2023.
But it is unlikely that Atalanta will move this month, as the 24-year-old Netherlands national team player is expected to stay in Bergamo until the end of the season.
This is due to the fact that the club’s sporting director confirmed that Liverpool are bidding for a versatile midfielder, before stressing that there was “nothing concrete” from Anfield.
“There is nothing concrete for the Cupmakers at Liverpool,” Tony D’Amico told Sky Italia ahead of their match with Bologna on Monday night.
“Their interest pleases us, but he is our player.”
Koopmainers scored a brilliant long-range goal and made the score 1-1 at the Renato Dall’ara Stadium, after which Rasmus Hoylund secured Atalanta’s victory with a score of 2-1.
It was Koopmainers’ fifth goal in 17 games this season, with him playing most of the matches as one of two deep-lying midfielders in a 3-4-1-2 scheme.
He was also used more advanced as a central midfielder and even as No. 10 and on the right flank, while at AZ Alkmaar he was often used as a central defender.
There is a possibility that Liverpool scouts came to the second game of Atalanta in Serie A, since they have watched the seventh number several times this season.
But D’Amico’s claim that their interest is “nothing concrete” so far is consistent with widespread reports, and it’s likely that Koopmainers is one of many options ahead of the summer.
On Monday, Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo reported that Liverpool are making two target lists depending on whether they can qualify for the Champions League next season.
It is not yet known who the Koopmainers will fall into, but in any case, there is hope that the club is not obliged to resort to any “list B”.
