Apple has released a new software update to AirPods 3 and its most powerful wireless earphones, AirPods Pro, which it released this year.
Apple has released a new 4A402 firmware update for the AirPods Pro from the previous 4A400 firmware that was released in October. Apple has also updated the AirPods 3 firmware from the previously available 4B61 to 4B66. So what is changing?
We can say that there are standard performance improvements and bug fixes in the update. The previous update also brought Conversation Boost support for AirPods Pro.
AirPods 3 and Pro got an update
Apple doesn’t provide information on what’s included in the refreshed firmware updates for AirPods, so we don’t know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.
There is no standard way to upgrade AirPods software, but AirPods usually install over the air when connected to an iOS device. Putting the AirPods in their box, connecting the AirPods to a power source, and then pairing the AirPods with an iPhone or iPad will soon initiate the installation of the update.
You can check your AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware by following these steps:
- Connect your AirPods or AirPods Pro to your iOS device.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on General.
- Tap About.
- Tap AirPods.
- Look at the number next to “Firmware Version”.
We’ll share details if we find any notable changes after the firmware updates have been installed, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.
How to update AirPods?
As we mentioned above, Apple does not allow you to manually update your AirPods. Actually, there is no way to update them manually. Instead, updates are automatically installed when they are available. However, you can always check the firmware version of your AirPods (in other words, what the current update version is).
Perform the following steps to make sure your AirPods are getting updates.
- Place your AirPods in the charging case and plug in the charging cable. If you have a charging case that supports wireless charging, make sure it is charging.
- Put your iPhone or iPad, whichever you are actively using, near where the AirPods charge.
- You don’t need to take any other action. Your AirPods will automatically receive the latest updates.
