Shortly after confirmation of Lisseth Chavez’s departure from the Chicago PD cast, the NBC production announced a new addition to the police team in season 8 of the series. It is actress Nicole Ari Parker (Empire: Fame and Power), who will play an important recurring character on the show.
Ari Parker will be Superintendent Samatha Miller. The character is originally from Atlanta and is described by the Deadline website as a progressive and fervent advocate of police reform. She wants to help Voight (Jason Beghe) and Intelligence adapt to the new reality, but will not tolerate violations of the new police guidelines and protocols.
The addition of the new character may indicate a change in the direction of the series, as Hank Voight is a detective who was never one to follow the rules. Now, with the recent cases of police abuse in the United States, which culminated in the death of George Floyd, characters like Voight are likely to be the focus of behavioral changes, or to be punished for their aggressiveness in approaching suspects. Miller is expected to be the key to this transition.
