Samsung’s new Exynos 880, developed for mid-range smartphones, focuses on affordable 5G connectivity support and high performance. Vivo Y70s was the first smartphone to use the new chipset.

Samsung’s new Exynos 880 chipset for the smartphones positioned in the middle segment had appeared in Geekbench over the past few weeks. The new processor, which we can call the mid-segment optimized version of the flagship Exynos 980 introduced last year, was first seen on a smartphone with the Vivo Y70s launched yesterday.

Samsung’s new Exynos 880 processor promises faster performance for heavy-duty tasks such as integrated 5G connectivity and gaming. Mass production of the chipset has already begun, and Vivo has officially used the Exynos 880 on its new smartphone Vivo Y70s. The new processor offers performance equivalent to the Snapdragon 765G, an important mid-level competitor.

Exynos 880 chipset promises high performance in games

The Exynos 880 was built using Samsung’s power-saving 8 nm FinFET process. The eight-core 64-bit CPU has two ARM Cortex-A76 cores at 2 GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz. The chipset provides compatibility with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 (and eMMC 5.1) storage.

Samsung’s new Exynos processor uses the ARM Mali-G76 MP5 GPU on the graphics side and promises higher gaming performance. The company claims that the new chipset supports advanced game APIs and technologies to reduce load times and deliver high frame rates. The GPU also supports Full HD + (2520×1080 pixels) displays.

Exynos 880 comes with an integrated 5G modem

The chipset includes an integrated 5G modem that supports download speeds up to 2.55 Gbps and upload speeds up to 1.28 Gbps over networks below 5G NR 6 GHz. The E-UTRA-NR Dual Link feature combines 5G and 4G LTE networks to offer download speeds of up to 3.55 Gbps and upload speeds up to 1.38 Gbps. The Exynos 880 seems to be using the same modem as the Exynos 980.
