Back in the USA! Prince William and Duchess Kate are planning to make their first visit to America in eight years.
A royal romance! Chronology of the relationship between Prince William and Duchess Kate
The Duke of Cambridge and his 40-year-old wife will visit Boston in December for the Earthshot Prize award ceremony. The couple announced this in a video posted on Twitter on Wednesday, July 20, after it was previously reported that the event would take place in the United States.
“In 2022, we will return and bring Earthshot to the USA, where we will present the next five prize winners,” William said in the clip. Then he was helped by Boston Red Sox player Xander Bogarts, who added, “And we’re going to do it right here in Boston.”
The former military pilot, together with David Attenborough, launched the Earthshot project in 2020 with the aim of awarding prizes to individuals and organizations that can find practical and effective solutions to the problems caused by climate change. The name of the project was inspired by the “Moonshot” of the late President John F. Kennedy, whose goal was to send a man to the moon.
Accordingly, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, together with Mayor Michelle Wu, will act as the host of the event.

“There is no more important Moonshot today than the restoration of the planet, and there is no better place to use the spirit of Moonshot than the city of Boston,” Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, Kennedy’s daughter, said in a press release on Monday, July 18. “It is a great tribute to President Kennedy that the Earthshot Prize will partner with the JFK Library Foundation to host the 2022 ceremony in Boston and inspire a new generation with the possibility of a sustainable future.”
William and Kate’s last trip to the United States took place in December 2014, when they visited New York to participate in several diplomatic events. The duo also had some fun attending a Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game where they met LeBron James.
The 37-year-old Ohio native presented the royal couple with customized T-shirts, including a mini T-shirt of his son Prince George, who is now 8 years old. (The couple later welcomed 7-year-old Princess Charlotte and 4-year-old Prince Louis.)

James, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, also made headlines for allegedly violating royal protocol by hugging Kate, but Buckingham Palace later came to the athlete’s defense.
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have greatly enjoyed their stay in the US, including attending an NBA game and meeting with LeBron,” a palace spokesman said in a statement. “When members of the royal family meet people, they want them to feel as comfortable as possible. There is no royal protocol.”
