The “X-Men” movie franchise, which existed for two decades, came to an end in 2020 with the release of Josh Boone’s “New Mutants,” but just because this continuity is no longer expanding, does not mean that everything in it is abandoned. Sir Patrick Stewart recently reprised the role of Professor X in an unexpected cameo in Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness, and fans will soon see the return of Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and Wolverine Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3. What else could there be in the future? it is currently unclear … but now we have high hopes of not only getting more of Charles Xavier in the Marvel cinematic universe, but also more of Sir Ian McKellen’s Eric Lensherr, also known as Magneto.
The reason we are more optimistic now than ever is because of the quotes directly from Patrick Stewart. Entertainment Tonight recently contacted the beloved actor, who is currently promoting the third and final season of the Paramount+ series “Picard,” and the publication asked him about Ian McKellen’s reaction to his latest transformation into Professor X. It turns out McKellen was very positive about this, and Stewart explained that neither of them was “done” with their roles in X-Men.:
In fact, everything went very well. He said something like [‘Hey, I would do that!’], yes, it’s true. But we’re not done yet, Sir Ian and I. We… we have plans.
Professor X and Magneto have already been remade in live action — James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender played younger versions of the hero and villain in the films “X-Men: First Class”, “X-Men: Days of the Past Future”, “X-Men: Apocalypse”. and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” but the love for the iterations of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen has never dissipated. For many, they are real versions of the characters for the big screen, and now it looks like fans have been given permission to rejoice that they are returning to their roles.
But when could this have happened? Obviously, this is a big question, and at the moment we have no idea what the answer is. Speaking sooner rather than later, “Deadpool 3” seems like a logical possibility for Marvel, given its already established ties to the X-Men canon, but we also can’t discount the possibility that the feature of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen returning together will be saved for one of Marvel’s major upcoming films, as well it is for “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
Needless to say, Marvel fans will be waiting with bated breath for this teaser game to become a reality.
