NHS Rejects Apple and Google’s Coronavirus Implementation Plan


The UK National Health Organization (NHS) rejected the coronavirus outbreak monitoring plan from Apple and Google. While the NHS says that a central practice will be more effective, people have reservations about privacy.

Technology giants Apple and Google offer new technology to minimize contact with coronavirus patients or carriers, but the UK National Health Organization (NHS) insists on a different and centralized system.

NHSX experts favor the central system:
Professor Christophe Fraser, one of the NHSX doctors, said in a statement to the BBC that the system they proposed was easier to control and would perform scientific data collection faster. Stating that their primary goal is to warn people who are at risk of being affected by the disease, the professor says that they think it will be easier to do this by using a central system.

This approach of the United Kingdom; it confronts the country with the Red Cross organizations of Switzerland, Estonia and Australia and the organization called DP3T, which operates throughout Europe, as these organizations support decentralized designs. France is among the defenders of the central model.

Call for ‘re-evaluation’ by experts:
Hundreds of cyber security experts in the country signed an open letter to review the decision. A significant number of these names work in Inria. Inria is shown as the unit responsible for developing the application. The European Commission announced that it would adopt both the central and decentralized system.

Firms have different approaches in the decision making process. Google’s goals include publishing an API that fits their model this week. Apple focuses on a method based on Bluetooth technology. The UK’s method is based on collecting data permanently by running the background application on phones. The system is activated instantly and returns to the background again. Although these are very fast, they increase energy consumption. Activation is not required in Apple’s method.

In the method developed by Apple and Google, when two smartphones get closer, they are informed by changing their key codes. In this method, the system becomes more secure because passwords are constantly updated. It is much more difficult to follow or hack this system.
