After a long 7-month journey that culminated in the successful arrival of the Perseverance rover on Mars, the occasion was for celebration. NASA released a video recording the reaction of scientists and technicians in the final (and most tense) moments of the Mars 2020 mission.

The rover, which is accompanied by the drone Ingenuity, landed on Martian soil last Thursday (18) at 5:48 pm (Brasília time). The purpose of the interplanetary endeavor is to look for signs of ancient life and collect soil samples for future shipment to Earth.

The record published by NASA shows an animation of Perseverance entering the atmosphere of Mars, including opening the parachute for landing. After minutes of tension, the images show NASA experts in ecstasy after confirmation that the rover has successfully landed on the Red Planet. See below the video of the celebration at the North American Space Agency.

“This landing is one of those crucial moments for NASA, the United States and global space exploration – when we know that we are on the verge of discovery and sharpening our pencils, we can say so, to rewrite textbooks,” said Steve Jurczyk, acting administrator of NASA, after the safe landing of the space vehicle.

He added that the Mars 2020 Perseverance mission embodies the “spirit of the nation of trying to persevere in even the most challenging situations, inspiring and making science and exploration advance”.
