In today’s age, when we look worried at the sprouts that emerge, the only truth is that we wish all of this would have happened in 2021, but we cannot swear to it. In fact, the WHO speaks of mid-2021 as the date for the COVID-19 vaccine, so events such as next year’s edition of the Mobile World Congress are still up in the air. And precisely the GSMA has spoken of MWC21, which will undergo significant changes.
MWC 2021 in summer
The GSMA just announced today a “rescheduling” of its series of events for 2021. MWC21 Shanghai will now take place between February 23 and 25, 2021, and Mobile World Congres 21 Barcelona between June 28 and June 1 July 2021, which means that in the case of the event in Barcelona, it goes from being held on its usual February date to 4 months later, already in the middle of summer.
After announcing that they were going to delay the MWC21 Barcelona to the first week of March 2021 -which was basically a couple of weeks above the usual date-, the GSMA has finally decided to make changes and delay the date for months to “deal with the external circumstances related to Covid-19. The GSMA is committed and investing so that MWC21 Barcelona can move forward safely and offer the unique and unavoidable experience that has made it the most important meeting platform for the world’s mobile ecosystem ”.
From face to face to blended
Last July, the Mobile World Congress announced that it would change its dynamics a bit, maintaining its face-to-face dynamics while having “virtual elements to complement” journalists who could not travel to Barcelona. But that has changed, and now the new MWC21 goes from being face-to-face to being blended, which means that we will see more online presentations and less physical presence.
Mats Granryd, Managing Director of the GSMA notes on these changes that “with a continuously changing global perspective and after consulting with our board of directors and members and our main exhibitors, we have made the careful decision to reschedule the MWC21 in Shanghai in February and the MWC21 Barcelona in June. The health and safety of our exhibitors, attendees, staff and the people of Barcelona are of the utmost importance. “
