The world’s first mobile phone with a physical keyboard and 5G internet is close to becoming a reality. The smartphone called Astro Slide is part of a project published on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The phone recalls the characteristic BlackBerry devices with a QWERTY keyboard that were successful in the 2000s. They had production stopped by TCL recently.
Astro Slide hits the market running Android 10, the latest mobile system from Google, in addition to offering a multiboot option to support Linux.
The technical file has a MediaTek processor, a minimum RAM of 6 GB, 128 GB storage, a 4,000 mAh battery with wireless charging and a 48 MP rear camera. To complete the specifications, it features a 6.53 inch screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels.
In relation to the physical keyboard, the smartphone has a sliding hinge mechanism called RockUp. The feature offers a mini laptop design with the functionality of a cell phone. In addition, the keyboard is backlit, meaning it allows use in dark places without the need for external lighting.
Astro Slide has beaten all crowdfunding goals. The collection currently amounts to R $ 3.6 million. To support the initiative, interested parties can contribute with amounts starting at R $ 2,772. The cell phone is expected to start shipping to buyers around the world in March 2021. However, there is no guarantee that the donor will receive a unit.
