David Mitchell, co-writer of the film, commented that this film will not be an exact sequel to the original trilogy. He explained that it is a different movie, but that it is totally connected to the previous ones.
“I saw the movie in Berlin in September,” Mitchell said. “It is very good. I can’t say what the movie is about, but I could explain what it’s not. It’s certainly not a sequel anymore, but something standalone that contains elements from the other three movies in a really ingenious way. It is a very beautiful and strange creation. It also hits some things we don’t see in action movies, which means it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”
According to the official synopsis, “In a world of two realities — everyday life and what lies behind it — Thomas Anderson will have to choose to enter the rabbit hole once more. Choice, as an illusion, is the only entry or exit into the Matrix, which is stronger, safer and more dangerous than ever.”
The film will feature the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity respectively. They are joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), Christina Ricci (A Love After Life), Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham), Telma Hopkins (Dead to Me), Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith and Eréndira Ibarra (all from Sense8).
Directed by Lana Wachowski, who writes the script alongside Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell (both from the Sense8 series), Matrix 4 hits theaters and the HBO Max catalog on December 22nd.
