Live-action rights for Jessica Jones and Punisher returned to Marvel Studios after the end of an old deal with Netflix. The characters starred in exclusive series for the platform under the extinct Marvel Television label.
The attractions were canceled after Disney announced Disney +, a streaming service that rivals Netflix itself. With that, the red platform maintained the rights of the heroes until the end of the agreement that expired this week.
The return of the rights of Jessica Jones and Punisher to Marvel Studios means that they will be able to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it is not yet clear whether Krysten Ritter and Jon Bernthal will play the heroes again.
Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, left between the lines that Netflix productions are not part of the MCU. Something curious, because the series – including Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist – made references to the universe of cinemas.
However, actor Charlie Cox was recently seen on the set of Spider-Man 3. Although it is unclear what his role will be in the feature, it is rumored that he would be playing Daredevil in a new film version.
In addition, strong rumors suggest that Krysten Ritter would return to the role of Jessica Jones in a brief appearance on She-Hulk. With the recent expiration of the deal, this could really happen at the Disney + exclusive attraction.
The fate of the Marvel / Netflix series
With the return of Defenders heroes’ rights to Marvel Studios, it is possible that attractions will leave Netflix. This is because streaming does not have exclusive rights to distribute the material.
At the same time, the series addresses themes considered more adult and this prevents them from being added to the Disney + catalog. Remembering that the platform focuses on a “friendly family” programming.
Therefore, the best solution would be to make them available on Star + – Disney’s future platform dedicated to the older audience. So far, there is no official information about this possible change or if the series will be “forgotten”.
