Cody Gakpo was forced to leave the national team at the beginning of the week due to a virus that swept through the camp of the Netherlands national team, but this does not jeopardize his results at Liverpool.
The 23-year-old had hoped to pick up where he left off at the World Cup by reuniting with his national team this month, but illness stopped him on the way.
On Thursday, it was announced that Gakpo was one of five Dutch players who left the camp before the Euro 2024 qualifier against France and Gibraltar.
They say that the chicken curry is to blame, although Virgil van Dijk refused to believe that the “delicious” food is to blame — not such a topic of conversation that we expected during this break!
But with no injuries and more than a week to recover, it’s no surprise that David Lynch of Football Insider reported that Liverpool are “confident” that he will be ready to face Manchester City.
Gakpo is expected to return to full training with the rest of his teammates later this week, and Jurgen Klopp will not return to his full squad no later than Thursday.
There is little time left to prepare for the trip to the Etihad on April 1, but by then the Reds also hope that Luis Diaz will return to full training, and Darwin Nunez will be ready after leaving the national team due to what has been described as an “ankle cut.”
Gakpo’s refusal to play for the national team was a personal disappointment, especially when he was forced to watch his team lose 4-0 to Ibrahima Konata’s France, but it really gave a break for several months.
Since signing with Liverpool in January, Gakpo has played in 14 consecutive matches and started in all but one match for a total of 1,057 minutes.
This is more than players like Luis Diaz, Stefan Bajcetic, Diogo Hota, Naby Keita, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones.
