The stars of the drama “Kokdu: Season of the Deity” told about the drama in Singles magazine!

MBC’s “Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a new fantasy novel that tells the story of a grim reaper named Kokdu (Kim Jung Hyun) who descends into this world to punish people every 99 years. When Kokdu meets Han Gye-Jeol (Im Soo-hyang), a doctor with mysterious abilities, he starts working as a doctor at home.

Given the fantasy aspect of this drama, the interviewer mentioned that it was difficult to imagine the story, but it made them more curious. Im Soo Hyang teased: “The important thing is that we have a lot of fun while filming. The character of Gye Jeol that I play is so cute and cute, it’s very nice.”

Kim Jung Hyun commented, “The script is interesting, and there are a lot of replicas in it. That’s why I thought my chemistry with the opposite actor was most important. During the game, I felt the energy exchange between myself and Soo Hyang, so it was fun.”

Since “Kokdu: Season of the Deity” touches on the heavy theme of death, it was assumed that the drama would have a gloomy atmosphere. However, Im Soo Hyang reassuringly said, “This is completely different. Instead, all the characters look like they’re missing a screw, so it’s kind of funny. As kids say these days, it’s like “nonsense and verbal vomit.” Of course, it will depict joys and sorrows, but we tried to express even heavy topics carelessly.”

About why he chose “Kokdu: Season of the Deity” as his first drama in two years, Kim Jung Hyun shared: “Kokdu is a character who is death itself. A transcendent being who connects the underworld and this world. When you think of death, don’t you think of light and darkness at the same time? He’s a character whose contrast should be so sharp, and as mentioned earlier, untangling heavy stuff in a non-[heavy] way was charming.”

Im Soo Hyang described the drama as a challenge for herself and clarified, “Gye Jeol is someone who considers herself ordinary, incompetent and timid, and that no one will ever love her. Despite these beliefs, she lives very bravely and then miraculously meets Kokda. She finds hope and finds meaning in life thanks to Kokdu, who loves Gye Jeol unconditionally.”

Then the two actors chose the main charms of each other’s characters, and Soo Hyang shared them: “It will be fun if you pay close attention to how the image of Kokdu changes from moment to moment. Once darkened, he also attentively follows Gye Jeol like a puppy. If you look at it from the outside, he’s like Jim Carrey. You will be able to see a variety of faces of Kim Jung Hyun’s actors.”

Kim Jung Hyun continued, “Gye Jeol is a person with unchanging beauty. She’s a character with a pathetic past, but she immediately recovers and gets up again. Should I say it’s cute stubbornness?

Finally, the couple explained the idea of “Kokdu: Season of Deity”. Soo Hyang shared it: “During a conversation with the director before filming, I asked, “What message do you want to convey through this drama?” They chose one of Gye Jeol’s phrases: “Kokdu, do you like yourself?” Both Kokdu and Gye Jeol cannot love themselves with all their hearts and feel emptiness in one part of their hearts. It seemed that this question gave the answer: “Everyone has the right to be loved.”

Kim Jung Hyun chimed in, “This question can be asked to every character who appears in the drama. Each of them overcomes their insecurities and finds true love. I hope it’s well conveyed so the audience can understand.”

The premiere of “Kokdu: The Season of the Deity” will take place on January 27 at 21:50 Korean time. KST, the full interview and photos with the actors will be published in the February issue of Singles Korea!
