The famous composer John Williams has announced that he will no longer retire after the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate”.
In an interview last June, Williams revealed that he was going to retire from dubbing films after more than 50 years of a career during which he wrote music for films such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Harry Potter and many others.
“I’m currently working on the movie Indiana Jones 5, which I think Harrison Ford, who is a little younger than me, has announced that it will be his last film. So I thought, if Harrison could do it, then maybe I can,” he said.
However, in a special appearance with Steven Spielberg last week (January 12), Williams announced that he had changed his mind.
Asked if he was really retiring from movies, Williams replied: “Well, Stephen is a lot of things. He’s a director, he’s a producer, he’s the head of a studio, he’s a writer, he’s a philanthropist, he’s a teacher. The only thing he is not is a person to whom you can say “no” — implying that he is ready to work on future projects with Spielberg.
“You never told me that until today,” Spielberg replied. “We always said that we would resign at the same time. So if he’s not like that, I think I am too. I need to work to find out what the hell I’m going to do next.”
Williams went on to say (via Variety): “It was my 90th birthday and I met a woman my age in Boston. She was a very nice woman, the same age as me, and I told her that the best decade in a man’s life is the age from 80 to 90, if you have health, because if you live to 90, it will be a huge compensation. You see everything with such magnetic vision that you recognize the most beautiful thing in the world of Peruvian butterflies. There is nothing more beautiful than this. So, this is the greatest decade. And she said, “No, the best decade in a person’s life is 90-100 years.” So I’m going to stay for a while.”
“But you can’t leave music either. Like I said, it’s like breathing. This is your life. This is my life. So a day without music is a mistake,” he added.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate” is released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
Along with Harrison Ford, the film’s cast includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shonette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Oliver Richters, Itann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen.
Speaking about the film, Ford said: “The Indiana Jones films are mysteries and adventures. But they’re also about the heart, and I’m really, really glad that we have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your ass.”
