James Gunn will work on the television spin-off of Peacemaker, one of the characters of his new The Suicide Squad: the TV series will always see John Cena as the protagonist and will be exclusive to the HBO Max streaming platform.
Peacemaker will be made up of eight episodes for its first season, with the director of The Suicide Squad writing all the episodes and directing some of them: the show will explore the origins of the character that John Cena plays in the film expected for 2021.
HBO Max therefore continues to offer content regarding DC characters, after the spin-off of the upcoming The Batman by Matt Reeves and after the original DC Universe Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Titans, Swamp Thing, Stargirl and Young Justice have recently passed on platform.
James Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will executive produce the TV series, with John Cena co-executive producing; production is expected to begin in early 2021, before Gunn begins work on the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie for Marvel.
“James Gunn has the unique ability to create an expansive universe, while simultaneously bringing the soul and wit of each character to life.
We can’t wait to dive into the world of Peacemaker, ”said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max.
James Gunn stated:
“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero / supervillain / greatest idiot in the world.
I’m thrilled to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC movie universe to the full breadth of a TV series.
And of course being able to work with John, Peter and my friends at Warner Bros. again is the icing on the cake. ”
John Cena added:
“I already mentioned that it was a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what will be a fantastic movie.
I am incredibly excited to have the chance to partner with him again for Peacemaker.
We can’t wait for the fans to see it. “
