The strange thing with a modern iPhone, turning it off is actually a bit troublesome. Here’s how to get it in order quickly.
Turning off your iPhone is not something we often need to do these days. Perhaps that’s why Apple decided to eliminate the simple shutdown feature on most modern iPhones.
With so many different features allowing you to exclude your iPhone from your day, this has caused a bit of confusion as to how to actually turn off the device.
How to turn off the iPhone with the buttons
The easiest way is to press the volume up button and the lock button at the same time. Press and hold it until a sliding button appears at the top. On newer devices, the GPS function will continue to work with the feature disabled, so you will be able to find it using the “Find Me” function.
If you can’t press both buttons at the same time, Apple updated iOS a few years ago by adding a “Power Off” button to the settings.
How to turn off iPhone in settings
Go to “Settings”, then “Basic”, and at the very bottom there should be a blue button with the words “Shutdown”. This will start the power-off process.
At the moment, there is no way to use the “Shortcuts” function in iOS to turn off your iPhone, otherwise we would be able to make a giant widget.
It remains a mystery why Apple did this to us, but it’s all interruptions. Perhaps Joni Ive thought before leaving that this was a design oversight. Or someone deep in the bowels of their fancy office has some metrics that show that people just don’t use it as often.
Anyway, now you know how to do it. It’s simple, but at the same time unnecessarily complicated.
