Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon called Paris Saint-Germain’s defeat by Manchester United in 2019 the biggest disappointment of his career.

United achieved a stunning success in the Champions League play-offs after the Parisians won the first leg with a two-goal difference at Old Trafford.

In addition to the two-goal advantage, Buffon and his team faced a weak United team, depleted by injuries and disqualifications.

Nevertheless, United somehow won the game by three goals to one, bringing them to the end according to the away goal rule on one of the most dramatic evenings in the club’s European history.

Romelu Lukaku scored on either side of Juan Bernat’s goal for PSG, which was a nervous outcome for the home team.

Then Diogo Dalot won a late penalty from United, which Marcus Rashford duly shot past Buffon, leaving PSG without time to respond and bringing United fans into raptures.

According to Sport Witness, Buffon recalled the events in a conversation with Christian Vieri on his Twitch channel.

“I was convinced that we were better. We went to Manchester to play United in the first leg of the 1/8 finals, and we dominated, but they knocked us out in the second match. It was the biggest disappointment of my career,” he said.

Buffon referred to the fact that United were not at full strength and said that despite being stronger on paper, mentally his PSG teammates were not racing.

“They were playing in Paris with children. There were De Gea, Lukaku and Rashford, but the rest were young. We made a mess mentally.” Buffon said.

Ultimately, United failed to knock Buffon and his team out, losing in the quarterfinals to Barcelona.

Nevertheless, this evening will remain in the memory of United fans for a long time, and Ole driving will be another unforgettable European event for the club.
