Elton John sent the students tickets to his show after they performed a cover of one of his songs during quarantine.
Back in June 2020, John said he was “shocked” after watching a cover of the song “I’m Still Standing” recorded by students from Telford Priory School in Shropshire during the lockdown.
In a personal message, the musician said that their cover of the 1983 classic “really lifted my spirits,” and shared that he had watched it three times in a row.
“You did something brilliant and did a brilliant version of ‘I’m still standing,'” John said in the message.
“I hope that all of you will have a great career and music will play a big role in it, because you definitely have talent.”
He also promised that students will be guests at a future show in the UK when live music starts playing again.
Now the former students will be watching Rocketman in Birmingham on June 10 as part of his last performances on the British arena as part of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
Teacher Ben Millington said the singer contacted them and told them to “pick” any dates they would like to see him on tour (via the BBC).
Millington also told the BBC that he was not surprised that the singer kept his word, as “both Elton and David Furnish were so nice and supported my work with these young talented musicians.”
The teacher added that all the students from the video are now studying music at the university.
“I just knew he could handle it,” he added.
In December, Elton John was confirmed as the first headliner of Glastonbury Festival 2023, which will be the last performance in the UK on his latest tour.
