Elon Musk: Time magazine’s long-awaited personality of the year was finally revealed this Monday (13). The chosen one is billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX. The businessman was remembered for his initiatives and investments in new technologies and plans involving space travel.
According to the publication, Musk “already has a reach that extends beyond Earth”, referring to the plan to build a “Noah’s ark” on Mars. “The ‘Person of the Year’ recognition is about influence, and few people have been more influential than Elon Musk in life on Earth, and potentially beyond it as well,” explained Edward Felsenthal, editor-in-chief of the magazine.
This year, Elon Musk made the talk on social media, with his tweets that moved the cryptocurrency market and for surpassing Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world, with assets of US$ 188 billion (more than R$ 1 trillion) . At SpaceX, he successfully completed the company’s first civilian-manned voyage. The four people orbited the planet for four days.
In 2020, the magazine followed in tradition and recognized US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Before that, he recognized people like environmental activist Greta Thunberg (2019), Persecuted Journalists (2018), Movement Against Harassment (2017), Donald Trump (2016) and Angela Merkel (2015).
Last week, an online poll that featured popular voting resulted in Jair Bolsonaro being “Person of the Year 2021.” When releasing the poll results, the magazine called the Brazilian president a “controversial leader” and emphasized that the choice of the public identifies the most influential person, “for better or for worse”.
