Have you seen the exchange of opinions between Stephen Colbert and Don Lemon about the latter’s clothes? This is probably the least important thing that has ever happened in the history of television, and I’m obsessed, and I need to talk about it. Let’s support those of you who may not be aware.
So, Don Lemon was on CNN the other day this morning. I don’t know if you regularly watch the popular talking head, but when it comes to clothes, he’s much more adventurous than most news anchors. He goes far beyond the usual black suit, and most often his fashion choice is really popular. As a guy who likes colorful buttons or something louder and more interesting, I support his choice and his willingness to be bold.
Unfortunately, when you get a little more adventurous, other people will have something to say, and the internet collectively had something to say about one of Lemon’s latest clothing choices. You can take a look at this bold ensemble below…
Now I need to be honest before I continue here. I’m not saying this is the best costume I’ve ever seen. It seems that it is a little unfinished in order to be shown on TV, but visually it is quite striking. Also, I’m for a big bump; so I’m not saying he has to wear it all the time, but I don’t hate it. I’d give him a C. I’d rather he tried too hard than not enough. However, I seem to be in the minority because a lot of people thought it was the worst thing anyone had ever worn. Many of these critics took to Twitter to roast Lemon for choosing an outfit, and it even spread to other TV shows, especially with Stephen Colbert.
The late-night comedian talked about Lemon’s choice of clothes during a segment of his show, and he couldn’t resist making fun of him for it. Here is a real quote from his teaser…
You know I love myself, Don Lemon. Dear dear friend of Don, emergency contact with the soul cycle (but)…As a wise man once said, what the hell is this? I know they want to add some comedy to CNN, and it’s fun. How do you break the news in this outfit? How do you actually talk about the tragedy in this, because what could be more tragic than the look he had this morning?… He looks like a school athletics teacher who went for a run, and then got a little hungry and stopped at a restaurant. but it was too cute for the restaurant, and they said, “Sir, you have to put on a jacket.”
The tone of Colbert’s teasing was very light, and he talked about how he constantly watches and loves CNN this morning, but when Lemon was asked about frying the next day, his tone was anything but light. He laughed while the clip was playing, but as soon as it was finished and he was asked if he wanted to answer, he very quickly became very serious and gave a long, multi-minute answer that raised many serious questions. questions. Here’s a portion…
I love Stephen Colbert. I think he’s funny. Obviously, I think comedians should have a little leeway, (but) it was interesting. I didn’t expect such a reaction. For me, it was something like a Rorschach test about wearing this outfit. First of all, it’s not a hoodie or anything like that. It was a hooded sweater. Mmm… I do not know if I want to delve into this, because in fact I was very surprised by it. Stepan, here’s the thing. I choose a lot of different outfits, and when I got this job, one of the things was that we want you to relax and feel more comfortable, and sort of agree with what’s going on in the world right now. People don’t wear suits that often. A lot of changes after the pandemic, right? I was just curious that there was such a reaction because I got a lot of negative reaction online. I just want to say that a lot has changed. I understand better (how women feel) when they talk about women’s skirts and women’s clothes, their hairstyles and makeup. Men are never so thoroughly studied. I think (people should) enjoy comedy. I think if Barack Obama can be criticized for a brown suit. I wonder if Vladimir Zelensky will be able to fight in a hoodie. If Trayvon Martin can start a revolution in a hoodie, then Don Lemon can tell the news in a hooded sweater.
Have you ever made a relatively light joke at the expense of a friend and touched a lot more nerves than you expected? That’s what it looks like. It’s like Stephen Colbert tried to put in a bit of a 2/10 quip, and Don Lemon took it like it was a personal 8/10 attack. That’s the worst feeling. You’re expecting maybe a good-natured middle finger back after your comment, and suddenly you hear that a strange and creepy picture in your friend’s living room depicting a clown, which, as you said, may haunt you in your dreams, has a personal connection with their deceased grandmother, and you just want to run out for the door and escape.
Now I’m not going to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t be offended by. Obviously, the political commentator felt that there was some heat in the joke, and he had to defend himself. I understand. A bold choice of fashionable clothes sometimes causes disappointment. There is nothing that people who have never risked fashion like to do more than point out people with bolder tastes and criticize them. In a hurry, it can get boring, and although Colbert dresses smartly, he is not too known for going too far beyond the limits. So, I understand where Don came from. There will always be haters, and when it comes to haters, Colbert didn’t seem to mean any real harm. Besides, Don Lemon had never joked before.
Considering how gloomy Lemon seemed in his response, I was a little worried that we might see safer clothing choices in the future, but don’t worry, fans. Lemon swore that he would wear a hooded sweater again, although he said that he would complement it with other accessories, since he does not like to wear the same outfit twice. I can’t wait to see it. Keep up the good work, Don! You’ll hear it from some haters, but many of us like big swings, whether they’re our personal taste or not.
