Why do Diesel Engines Lose Power and Efficiency Over Time?


Diesel engines are more durable than other engine types and can be used for hundreds of thousands of kilometers as long as proper maintenance is performed, but even the best-looked engines lose power and efficiency over time. So why is this happening?

Diesel engines are generally preferred by people because they achieve more efficient fuel consumption than gasoline engines. The more durable the materials used in these engines, the longer the life of the engine and this is seen as one of the factors that attract people.

Of course, diesel engines that require some care and maintenance, if properly maintained, can cover hundreds of thousands of kilometers, not to upset the user. Nevertheless, even diesel engines that you think are best looked after may lose power and fuel efficiency after a while. So what’s causing it?

Fuel injectors are the biggest cause of power loss

Jason Fenske, the owner of the Engineering Explanied channel, which produced automobile videos, went to the testing laboratory of the oil company ExxonMobil to find an answer to this question. Jason noticed that diesel engines had several reasons for the loss of power and efficiency, but the biggest problem was fuel injectors.

Diesel engines with high pressure fuel, cylinders are sprayed. Small fuel injectors can also accumulate carbon over time. With this carbon build-up, diesel engines are starting to produce less power and absorb more fuel. If you have a diesel-powered car and you find that your vehicle no longer works as before, you may need to check the fuel injectors.
