The immunity of the human organism to the new coronavirus can last only six months, if this new version of the virus behaves similarly to the other variants, causing common colds. This is what a study by researchers at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands reveals.
In the survey, the medical records of 10 men over the past 35 years were analyzed to determine the levels of antibodies in their bodies for any of the other four types of human seasonal coronaviruses identified to date. Participants, aged between 27 and 40 years, were tested at intervals of three to six months.
According to the study’s authors, the results revealed an “alarmingly short duration of immunity against coronaviruses”. In addition, they also showed frequent reinfections 12 months after the initial disease and a significant reduction in antibody levels six months after the first infection.
Still according to the researchers, the four strains of human coronavirus have little in common, but all seem to induce short-lived immunity, with a rapid decrease in the number of antibodies. They believe that this characteristic is common to all variants: “If Sars-CoV-2 behaves like a seasonal coronavirus in the future, a similar pattern can be expected,” they concluded.
The idea of immunity passports, presented by several governments in recent weeks, allowing relaxation of social distance measures for people with immunity to the new coronavirus, was widely criticized by the study authors.
“As protective immunity can be lost six months after infection, the prospect of achieving functional herd immunity by natural infection seems very unlikely,” they warned.
It is important to note that the study has some limitations, requiring further research, more in-depth, to confirm the findings regarding the cause of covid-19.
