Trigger Warning: This story involves a sensitive subject that may be difficult for some readers.
Longtime model and television and film actress Brooke Shields has been working in the industry for a long time and has experienced her share of ups and downs. Unfortunately, she only recently revealed in a shocking new Paramount Pictures documentary that she was sexually assaulted early in her Hollywood career. Shields revealed heartbreaking details, including her attempt to “stay alive and walk away.”
“The Brief Child” Premiere: Brooke Shields premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday and received a standing ovation for the star. Although the former supermodel has not revealed the identity of her attacker, she says he was someone she already knew and thought they were meeting to discuss her casting in an upcoming film. The Sahara actress says in the documentary (via News 24) that the assailant returned her to his hotel, claiming he would call her a taxi from his room, only to attack her. After saying “no” to the aggressor, she froze and could only think about staying alive long enough to get out. The actress said:
It was like a struggle … I was afraid I was suffocated or something. That’s not how I fought. I didn’t do that. I’m just absolutely frozen. I thought my “no” was enough. And I just thought, “Stay alive and go.”
The 57-year-old star then says her friend and head of security Gavin de Becker later informed her, “This is rape.” However, the actress says it was that she wasn’t “willing to believe it,” so she decided not to talk about the incident until now.
Actress Wanda Nevada’s account of the attack reflects the stories of many other victims who have come to light since the #MeToo movement began to gain momentum after the Harvey Weinstein scandal began to unfold. The story behind the women who broke the Weinstein story was fully told and engrossingly in a recent critically acclaimed film she said.
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields was directed by director Lana Wilson (known for her critically well-received Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana). Premiered on Hulu for two parts after completing its festival run. The film documents the saga of Shields’ rise to fame from when she was 11 months old to the present. The film is largely related to how the young actress was sexualized in the film, starting at the age of 12, in “Beautiful Babe” and perhaps most famous in the Blue Lagoon.
She was only 14 when she was hired to portray Emmeline’s shipwreck in Randall Kleiser’s coming-of-age story. Recently, the actress has been very vocal when she recalled her difficulties on set, mostly catching pneumonia and being forced to act in the nude as an underage teenager.
The upcoming documentary is said to depict the media’s obsession with teen Brooke Shields’ virginity, her mother’s alcoholism and her first marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi. According to Susan’s suddenly alum, she felt it was time to tell her story, but was afraid she was being “shut down” and perceived as a victim. She continued:
It seemed like the right time in my life to participate in a documentary, but I never wanted to close down. The industry I was in really wanted you shut down, and I just didn’t want to lose that. I didn’t want to be that victim.
Unfortunately, the star had to go through such a painful life experience, but one could imagine that she feels relieved to finally tell her story. Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields will be streaming later this year for everyone with a Hulu subscription. You can check with Cinemablend for updates about this 2023 movie release and more.
