The good news for BMW, which depreciated Mercedes with sales figures in the US, came from its sub-brand BMW M, which produces high-performance vehicles. In 2019, the BMW M was able to outperform the Mercedes AMG by significantly increasing its sales.
BMW M’s global car sales boomed last year, and BMW’s sub-brand, which produces high-performance vehicles, set an all-time record on its behalf. BMW M’s sales rose 32.2% worldwide and the company sold a total of 135,826 vehicles.
BMW has surpassed Mercedes, which has been at the top of luxury car sales in the US for the first time since 2015, with an increase in sales last year. However, BMW M’s rising sales hit another blow to Mercedes. AMG, Mercedes’ high-performance vehicle manufacturing division, managed to increase its sales by 11.8% in 2019 and sold 132,136 vehicles worldwide, but remained behind the BMW M.
BMW M sales rise unstoppable
BMW M sales accounted for about 6% of total global sales volume in 2019. In addition to 4 new performance models based on the X3, X4, X5 and X6, the 2020 BMW M2 CS and the 2020 BMW M8 were also instrumental in boosting BMW M’s sales.
The BMW M (formerly BMW Motorsport) was founded in 1972 for BMW’s racing program. The first M-branded car was the BMW M1, designed by Italdesign in 1978, and BMW M has since then continued to sell powerful cars on the global market. With the launch of new BMW M models, the brand’s high-performance segment is expected to further expand its market share throughout the year.
