Blade: Mahershala Ali Talks About Film And MCU Entry

Blade: Mahershala Ali spoke for the first time about his experience in the role of iconic vampire hunter Blade. The character’s solo film is still in development, but the actor made a brief appearance on Eternos, marking his official MCU debut. Although the actor doesn’t appear, he has a brief speech.

Ali commented that even though he only had his voice in the film, it was a challenge to be part of the creation of the character. He also commented on what it was like to officially enter the Marvel Heroes universe.

“It was really cool to do that,” commented the actor. “It was scary. Because, you know, you’re talking before you shoot. I’m very particular about my choices, as are most actors, so having to make some choices — even with a speech, vocally — early on, it brought up some very real anxieties. And it made the work real. It’s like, Okay, this is happening now’ you know, and its exciting.”

“This Marvel world is obviously the biggest in cinema, and just to have my little introduction to it — starting with Comic Con a few years ago, and now the early stages of stepping into this character’s shoes — it was special and really cool, I’m excited to start and do more,” concluded Ali.

In the closing credits of Eternals, Kit Harington’s character Dane Whitman would be hugging his comic book mantle as the Black Knight. The scene shows Whitman trying to muster the courage to wield the cursed sword, the Ebon Blade, which is his family legacy.

However, he is interrupted by a voice in the room behind him. There is no mention of Blade in the scene, but director Chloé Zhao confirmed that the voice belonged to the vampire played by Mahershala Ali. In the comics, Blade and Whitman have several connections.

Directed by Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) and scripted by Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen), Blade is currently in pre-production. So far Marvel has not released other actors who will be in the film, official synopsis or release date.
