ASUS has revealed the name of its next smartphone from the ROG Phone line, which will skip a number. After bringing the ROG Phone 3 to market last year, the company will launch the ROG Phone 5 in 2021.
The company confirmed the device’s name in a post on the social network Weibo. In addition to skipping a number in the nomenclature of the next ROG Phone, ASUS has also confirmed that it will make an edition of the device in partnership with Tencent, a Chinese gaming giant.
So far, the company has not revealed the reason for breaking the chain of names of the ROG Phone line. The main explanation for the change is the meaning of the number 4 in certain Asian countries: for some cultures, the figure is considered a sign of bad luck, which can harm sales of the device to superstitious consumers.
Enemies of chance
If the superstition theory is correct, ASUS will not be the first company in Asia to carry out a global launch that changes the name of a product because of luck. OnePlus, for example, went from OnePlus 3 to OnePlus 5 for the same reason.
Qualcomm has also made a change to its processor line to target users who believe in numerology. The company’s most powerful chipset in 2021 is the Snapdragon 888, which brings a lucky number in Asian cultures.
Speaking of Snapdragon 888, the trend is for the processor to appear on the ROG Phone 5. The ASUS smartphone should also feature a screen with up to 144 Hz and plenty of RAM, but the manufacturer has not yet confirmed the specifications of the gamer phone.
The release date of the ROG Phone 5 was also not revealed by ASUS. If the company follows its standards in the market, the device should be revealed by the middle of the year.
