Despite being easily accessible to Google users, Google Photos has many features that are still overlooked. The image and video storage service, available in the browser and as an application for Android and iPhone (iOS), allows the creation of personalized clips and montages, in addition to presenting different storage modalities for its users. Here are six little-known Google Photos features that can make your life easier.

1. The option of unlimited free storage
One of the most important functions of Google Photos is the cloud storage of images and videos saved on the phone. There are different types of storage in the Google service. The mode that performs the backup of photos in original size allows up to 10 GB of storage, which can be expanded up to 100 GB through a subscription that costs R $ 6.99 per month.

Another option is unlimited storage, in which the photos are reduced in size, but with high quality.

To enable the possibility of unlimited storage, the user must access the “Settings” menu in the app and then the option “Backup and synchronization. It is necessary to pay attention to the video format on the device, as not all are covered in the same way through the Google service.

In December 2018, Google Photos excluded video formats like VOB and RAW from its unlimited storage plan. Therefore, if you want to guarantee a full backup, the user should check these details.

2. Search for photos by emojis or image texts
Google Photos allows you to perform internal searches for certain images located on your device or storage. One of the highlights of these searches is that they can be done using words or texts that appear in the images. Another curious feature is the search for images through emojis.

Thus, if the user inserts an emoticon with sunglasses, for example, Google Photos will show all images in which to recognize the use of the accessory. In addition, the service’s search system works with various correlations, such as identifying, for example, the location of photos or the user’s contacts that appear in a certain image.

To perform searches on Google Photos, just use the search bar at the top of the main screen of the application. Enter the word or emoji that can be related to the image you are looking for, then check the result.

3. Memories “Stories”
In the second half of 2019, Google Photos gained a feature of stories with memories at the top of its main screen. The functionality retrieves old images according to the date the user created them and displays them privately. However, they can be shared through Google Photos itself on other platforms.

In the “Settings” menu, it is possible to use the “Souvenirs” option to completely disable the feature, or hide certain people and animals that may appear depending on the application’s choices. Another possibility is to access the “Suggestions” menu, in which the user can disable the function of recalling a specific day.

4. Make photo video with music
You can make videos with photos and music simply using Google Photos. The application can select images through face recognition. Another option is for the user to select the images they want to include in a video and then manually configure the duration of each image in the sequence that will form the video.

To create a video, the user simply taps on the “Movie” icon, available at the top of the “For you” screen of the application. Then, you must choose the type of video you want to create.

5. Make photo montage
It is possible to join several photos in a single montage through Google Photos. To perform the process, the user only needs to select the photos he wants to include in an assembly and then confirm the command for creating the collage.

The assembly is done automatically by the Google app. Because of this, it is not possible to interfere in the order of the final arrangement of the photos. If the user wants to change the sequence of the photos, the ideal is to repeat the process until reaching a montage that pleases him. Once the montage is complete, you can share it on social networks, such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram.

6. Automatic edits
Another highlight of Google Photos are the automatic effects, available from 2018. Through these effects, the storage service itself continuously suggests edits and changes to images, which are presented as “creations” in the application. There is, for example, the use of automatic effects for the creation of stylized photos, which undergo changes in their colors and lighting. Another suggestion of automatic effect that can be used is to change the rotation of the photos.

With each new Google Photos “creation”, the user will receive notifications that a new panorama or stylized photo has been created. All automatic edits can be configured using the “Suggestions” option in the “Settings” menu.
